Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose the right surgical suture?
Consider the surgery type, tissue type, required absorption timeline, and tensile strength needs. Fast-healing tissues like oral mucosa need short-term support (7–10 days), while deep fascial layers may require extended support (up to 180 days). Internal closures generally use absorbable sutures; cardiovascular and high-tension orthopaedic repairs often use non-absorbable materials.
What is the difference between absorbable and non-absorbable sutures?
Absorbable sutures are broken down by the body over time through hydrolysis or enzymatic activity, eliminating the need for removal. They are ideal for internal tissues that heal within weeks to months. Non-absorbable sutures remain in the body permanently and are used where lasting support is required — such as cardiovascular surgery, sternal closure, and certain orthopaedic repairs.
Which Desmo Care suture is equivalent to Vicryl?
Absorbex and DesmoNex are equivalent to Vicryl (polyglactin 910). Both are braided polyglycolic acid (PGA) sutures with similar tensile strength profiles and absorption timelines of 60–90 days. Absorbex features the Glycomer 370 coating for enhanced knot security, while DesmoNex uses a polycaprolactone coating.
